TARUN TAHILIANI PLAYS SAFE

A LITTLE of what Delhi-based designer, Tarun Tahiliani, showed on Day 5 of the HDIL India Couture Week could loosely - very loosely - be called couture....but even that would be stretching it and an obvious (but hard) attempt on our part to be nice to a designer who has over twenty years of experience under his belt.

All of Tarun's trademark and signature styles (seventy-seven garments in all) were displayed on his models, giving us the distinct feeling that it was nearly impossible to tell this collection from last years, or the year before that....or even five years ago....!

What Tarun calls "Modern construction", draping, Swarovski festooned lehengas, chikankari kurtas, golden drapes in the tones of the Padshahnama, luscious brocades and lots of glittering jewels in rainbow hues left us bedazzled - but that was only because we were not forewarned to carry our favourite pair of Gucci glares....!

The silhouettes that were draped close to the body and the extensive use of pleating and pin-tucks have been done to death by Tarun collection after collection.

It's high time he got over playing safe and gave us something new to write home about.

Our verdict: Predictable....!
